What’s so green about it: The first hybrid BMW
Why it’s not easy being green: Mixing “sporty” and “hybrid”

The BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is BMW’s first hybrid, unveiled at the North American International Auto Show Jan. 13. European automakers were slow to jump on the hybrid bandwagon, which started rolling after Toyota introduced its second-generation Prius in 2003. BMW’s system is a “two-mode” hybrid. The system works like a conventional hybrid at lower speeds, running on battery, gasoline engine, or both. Battery power shuts off at higher speeds for conventional hybrids, but BMW continues to get a boost from battery power at higher speeds. Coupled with an improved transmission, BMW says its hybrid is more responsive.
